What is surface dressing?
Surface dressing is a cost-effective way of maintaining a road. It restores skidding resistance and seals the road surface to prevent water ingress. Phase one is hot bitumen ‘binder’ is sprayed onto the road and chippings are then applied and rolled in. The road is then swept a number of times to remove excessive chippings. The final stage of compacting the chippings into the surface is completed by vehicles movement using the road.
Phase two of the process will take place once the chippings have set in and been swept clean, a bitumen sealer will be applied, this is call lock chip. This seals the chipping in.
Duration of works:
Each site will be treated in a single day, subject to any bad weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.
Surface dressing will take place on the 7 and 8 June. With the lock chip seal taking place on the 14 June.
Actual dates of attendance will be informed using warning signs installed in the road prior to our arrival.
What you need to do if you live in the affected area:
We ask that during this time every effort is made to park all vehicles off the carriageway (i.e. on driveways in garages or other streets unaffected).
Traffic Management:
In order to keep traffic disruption to a minimum, the works will be carried out under road closures usually from 0730 to 1930.
Gatemen / Traffic Marshals will be positioned at either end of the site to redirect traffic and pedestrians to ensure the safety of the public and workforce during the road closure. We ask that you give them your full support and heed their advice whether you are a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist.
Every effort will be made to accommodate essential vehicular access to properties and businesses adjacent to the works area but this will be subject to progress of the works. Individual requirements will have to be agreed with the scheme supervisor.
Warning for cyclists:
We also ask cyclists to be extra cautious after works are complete. Chippings may gather in cycling lanes and the sides of the road as the final stage of compacting the chippings into the surface is completed by vehicles using the road.
