Summary
Due to increasing demand, specialist primary school, Westfield School, required a major extension project to enable it to increase capacity to accommodate more students.
ODS won the competitive tender for the project by outperforming other regional contractors in terms of cost, quality, and deliverables. ODS showcased a strong commitment to managing a live school environment and creating social value, which were crucial factors for Westfield School.
Requirements
The expansion programme involved several key components, including the construction of front and rear extensions (including elements of steel frame), significant internal alterations to optimise use of space and functionality, external hard and soft landscaping to enhance the environment, and the implementation of a Swale system, as part of the drainage works, to promote sustainable water management and reduce the risk of flooding.
Challenge
Covid-19: The project faced significant challenges, primarily due to the works taking place during the Covid-19 pandemic. ODS had to ensure the project stayed on schedule, and within budget, despite the disruptions caused by the pandemic. This required careful management of supply chains, stringent health and safety protocols, and consistent communication with all stakeholders.
Live school environment: The construction work had to be conducted in a live school environment, necessitating measures to minimise disruption and adhere to strict safeguarding requirements.
Solution
The project was executed with meticulous planning, coordination, and communication to overcome the challenges posed by the pandemic. ODS maintained close relationships with suppliers to ensure the timely delivery of materials, despite disruptions. Rigorous health and safety protocols were enforced to protect workers, staff and students, and strict safeguarding measures were implemented to ensure everyone’s safety. ODS also worked closely with staff at the school to minimise disruption to the teaching environment and the school day.
Results
The extensions and internal alterations, have enabled Westfield School to increase the number of places available, meeting the growing demand for its specialised services. They have also enhanced the learning environment for its current and future students. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, ODS delivered the project on time and within budget, demonstrating effective project management and adaptability.
This successful expansion project exemplifies how strategic planning, proactive management, and strong stakeholder collaboration can overcome significant challenges. The partnership with ODS not only addressed the school’s immediate need for increased capacity, but also reinforced the school’s mission to provide a supportive and enriching environment for its students.
