ODS’s Initiative to Employ Ex-Offenders

Client: Bullingdon Prision

Project: Initiative to Employ Ex-Offenders

Summary

In 2023, ODS began exploring opportunities to employ ex-offenders, inspired by insights from the Prison and Probation Service and local business Tap Social. Through direct engagement with prisons and collaborative partnerships, ODS has navigated logistical challenges to integrate prison leavers into its workforce, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and community impact.

Challenges

ODS faced several challenges in its efforts to employ ex-offenders. One significant issue was the logistical difficulty of post-release housing, as many applicants were relocated to different counties upon release, which complicated their ability to accept roles. Another challenge involved the need for comprehensive risk assessments when partnering with open prisons under the Release on Temporary License (ROTL) program. Additionally, changes in government policies on early release reduced the availability of eligible candidates, limiting opportunities for direct employment placements.

Solution
To address these challenges, ODS took a structured and collaborative approach. ODS participated in employment events at Bullingdon Prison, allowing direct engagement with prisoners to discuss career opportunities and promote ODS as a supportive employer. Recognising the need for broader collaboration, ODS partnered with Springhill Open Prison to create opportunities for prisoners on ROTL, providing them with work experience while nearing release.

ODS also joined forces with the government’s "New Futures Network" initiative, working closely with the South Central Employment Lead to facilitate placements for prison leavers. Despite these hurdles, ODS successfully made multiple employment offers, and continue to work with prison and probation services to offer further opportunities.
