Netherwood Road Resurfacing
Client: Oxfordshire County Council / Oxford City Council
Budget: £20,000
Project: Netherwood Road Resurfacing
Completed: April 2024
Summary:
The ODS Highways & Engineering Team manage the Section 42 agreement in partnership with Oxford City Council for Oxfordshire County Council.
Netherwood Road was identified via our Inspection regime and engineering assessment along with complaints from local residents. The scope of work was drafted by the technical team and the budget cost submitted to OCC for approval. The carriageway is heavily used and is a major cut through around the Northway estate. The carriageway had deteriorated and potholes and major rutting had formed through the running line of the carriageway.
Requirements:
To remove the existing surface to a depth of 80mm and adjust iron works.
To replace damaged and missing kerb sets.
To apply a one-layer of high-quality asphalt mix designed.
To reinstall all road marking.
To implement effective traffic management measures to minimise disruption during construction.
Challenges:
Netherwood Road is a cul-de-sac so had only one way in and out.
The makeup of the road was not a designed specification, it evolved over 50 years.
The depth of the existing materials.
To reconstruct the carriageway without digging out and disturbing the substructure materials and replace with a solid structure.
Solutions:
Consultation was undertaken with residents and stakeholders on the programme of works. The first part was to mill off the surface to a maximum depth of 80mm.
ODS worked with their surfacing contractor and suppliers to find a suitable material that would provide a lasting material with the desired outcome.
The pavement layer was reconstructed with bitumen materials.
ODS designed a single layer solution which was durable and provides the same structure as a standard two layer system of binder and wearing courses.
Results:
The resurfacing project was successfully completed, significantly improving the quality and durability of the carriageway.
Client Testimonial:
ODS delivered the scheme to a high standard with minimum disruption.
By using the one layer material it was good to see the project finished ahead of schedule with some cost savings.
