Client: Oxford City Council

Budget: 55,000

Department: Highways and Engineering (Infrastructure Solutions)

Completed: August 2025

Summary

ODS Highways were commissioned by Oxford City Council to improve a footway running through ancient woodland. Tree roots were breaking through the existing pavement, creating an uneven surface that posed safety risks to pedestrians and impacted accessibility. The path is heavily used by commuters and visitors alike.

Requirements

The work was to be completed within two weeks of the start date.

Due to the heavy use of the path, advance signage of its closure and the works taking place was required.

The trees close to the path needed extra protection during the works, and vegetation needed to be cleared to enable the works to take place.

The existing surface area needed to be regulated.

Flexipave was to be installed over the full length of the path, approximately. 516m2. We used Flexipave because it is a sustainable porous material, that adjusts to different temperatures and weather conditions without cracking. Flexipave is a 50/50 mix of recycled rubber derived from vehicle tyres, and natural stone aggregate, making it extremely eco-friendly. With carbon reduction targets a huge factor in project developments, Flexipave is well-positioned to assist with hitting those milestones.

The site was then to be cleaned and cleared.

Challenges

  1. The footway’s heavy daily foot traffic required careful planning to maintain access.

  2. Working within ancient woodland added ecological constraints, as all activities needed to comply with environmental protection measures.

  3. The shaded, damp conditions beneath the tree canopy affected curing times for Flexipave.

Solutions

Works were phased to be completed in smaller sections to limit the Health and Safety risks of the works. This approach minimised disruption to users whilst ensuring safe working conditions.

Protective barriers safeguarded tree roots, aligning with ecological guidelines.

Communication with the public via clear signage maintained goodwill and safety throughout the project.

Each entrance had alternative routes whilst we worked on small sections at a time.

The team worked extended hours to relay the maximum surface possible in a day as weather is a key factor on the success of using flexipave.

Daily briefs and regular site inspections ensured the works were always completed and guidelines were adhered to at all times.

Results

The surfacing works were completed on time and have made the path usable all year round irrespective of weather conditions. The new smooth path has alleviated the possibility of any trips, slips or falls.
