Summary
Fitzwaryn School in Wantage, a special school for children aged 3 to 19, needed a new car parking area along with repairs to several parts of their grounds. ODS was awarded the £18,000 contract to design and create the new car park, thanks to their proven track record, offering a one-stop-shop solution that included excavation, drainage, surfacing, and lining services.
Requirements
The school needed additional parking space to accommodate buses and improve traffic flow. This involved excavating a large grass area, adjusting drainage levels, creating bus-sized parking bays, and relining the entire car park. ODS was also tasked with patching various tarmac areas within the school grounds.
Challenges
The project required the excavation of a large grass area, working around various levels to ensure proper surface water drainage.
Certain areas were too small for mechanical equipment, requiring the work to be done manually.
The project needed to be completed without interfering with the daily operations of a school that serves children with special educational needs.
Solution
ODS addressed these challenges by manually completing tasks in tight areas where machinery couldn't reach, ensuring precision in the confined areas. They successfully created four new bus-sized parking bays, relined the entire car park, and patched up areas needing tarmac repair. Throughout the process, ODS worked closely with school staff to maximise parking space and deliver the best solution.
Results
The project was completed within budget and to a high standard. The results included durable footpaths using Flexipave to protect tree roots, the addition of a new table tennis area for park visitors, enhanced drainage and a resurfaced car park for improved long-term functionality, all while minimising disruption to park users.
