Project: Didcot Power Station Chimney Blowdown (Chimney A)
Department Highways & Engineering
Date of completion: 9th Feb 2020
Budget: £4,750 + VAT
Client
Brown and Mason (BAM) have established themselves as one of the largest industrial decommissioning, dismantling, demolition and asbestos removal companies in the world. During the course of the company’s history, the types of projects have been varied and have included the removal of asbestos and total decommissioning, dismantling and demolition of over 50 power stations.
Requirement
As ODS have gained a good reputation in supporting major events with road closures around Oxford, we were asked to support BAM with the Didcot Power Station Chimney blowdown. After discussing the traffic management and road closure arrangements that needed to be put in place, we jointly carried out a driven inspection of the exclusion zone and agreed the closure.
Solution
ODS would manage the process from start to finish. We produced the closure routes and maps indicating the closure point allowing for signage and manpower as well as submitting the cost for the Temporary Traffic Road Order (TTRO. We liaised with Oxfordshire County Council to agree the diversion routes, closure points and timing of the event. Due to ODS key relationship with the County Council, this meant BAM could just concentrate on the blowdown of the tower.
Result
Once Oxfordshire County Council agreed the closure and diversions, they produced the TTRO which allowed the event to happen as and when it was needed by BAM.
Feedback
ODS met all requirements including deadlines and kept an open line of communications.
“Thank your team on our behalf please and thanks to you and Barrie Welford for being key members of the blowdown team and arranging all the road closures.” Calum Cameron, Senior Health & Safety & Environment Manager
