Burbush Road Resurfacing
Client: Oxfordshire County Council / Oxford City Council
Budget: £67,000
Department: Highways and Engineering (Infrastructure Solutions)
Completed: April 2024
Summary
The ODS Highways & Engineering Team manage the Section 42 agreement in partnership with Oxford City Council for Oxfordshire County Council.
Burbush Road was identified via our Inspection regime and engineering assessment along with many enquiries from local residents. The carriageway is heavily used and as a cut through and has deteriorated with potholes with major rutting forming through the running line of the carriageway.
The scope of work was drafted by the technical team and the budget cost submitted to OCC for approval. This had to be reassessed before the work was carried out as we had to change the scope of the treatment to suit the condition of the carriageway which had further deteriorated.
Requirements
To remove the existing surface to a depth of 80mm and adjust iron works.
To apply a one-layer high-quality asphalt mix designed.
To reinstall all road marking.
To implement effective traffic management measures to minimise disruption during construction.
Challenges
Parked cars on the road and getting them moved as some residents didn’t take notice of the letter drops and signage.
The design we specced was a two part process.
Solutions
The team went door to door to find the owners of the parked cars.
The spec was changed from a patching scheme and Surface dress to a 60mm one layer Tufflex – the changed spec suited the treatment needed and meant we only needed to conduct one visit reducing the disruption to the residents.
Results
The resurfacing project was successfully completed, significantly improving the quality and durability of the carriageway.
Feedback
Residents said it was an excellent job and that ODS delivered the scheme to a high standard with minimum disruption. They were impressed that the relining of the carriageway was done on the same day.
